St Winifred's is a small and very popular school which is currently oversubscribed. Almost all pupils come from Roman Catholic backgrounds. The proportion of pupils eligible for free school meals is much lower than that found in other schools. Most pupils come from White British backgrounds; other groups include pupils from Irish, Black African and Black Caribbean heritages. A high proportion of pupils speak English as an additional language, although few are at an early stage of learning English. The number of pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities is slightly lower than that in other schools; many of these pupils have speech and communication difficulties. The proportion of pupils with a statement of special educational needs is similar to the national average.
