Ashburton is a larger than average school that has grown in size since the last inspection. It takes pupils from the full range of ability but, taken overall, the attainment of pupils when they start at the school is well below average. Around half the pupils come from a wide range of minority ethnic heritages, principally Black Caribbean and Black African, and a greater than usual number of pupils speak English as an additional language. The proportion of pupils with learning difficulties or disabilities is well above average, although the number with statements of special educational need is average. The school serves an area of some social deprivation and twice as many pupils as average are eligible for free school meals. It is part of the Excellence in Cities initiative, a national project aimed at raising standards. A new school building was completed in April 2006.
