St Mary Cray is a much smaller than average primary school. The large majority of pupils are White British. The proportion of pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities is close to the national average. The proportion of pupils learning English as an additional language is below average and few are at an early stage of learning English. The school has achieved a number of nationally recognised awards including the Activemark and Healthy School status. At the time of the last inspection, the school was given a notice to improve because teaching was inadequate, pupils were not making enough progress and attainment was low. There have been several changes of leadership and high staff turnover in the last year. Five new class teachers joined the school in September 2009. Since September 2009 the deputy headteacher has been the acting headteacher.
