This is a large school situated on the northern outskirts of the town. Most pupils are from a White British heritage with around one quarter of the pupils from a minority ethnic background including Traveller children with a Gypsy/Roma or Irish heritage. In recent years, an increasing and significant number of pupils have joined the school at a time other than the beginning of the school year. Some are from Eastern Europe and at an early stage of learning English. The number eligible for free school meals and the proportion of pupils with learning difficulties and/or disabilities are well above average. The school manages the on-site local authority learning resource base for pupils with speech and languages difficulties. The school recently gained the International School Award.
