Important information for parents

The goal of Find My School is to make Ofsted reports more transparent and understandable to parents. This page explains how we do it and answers some common questions.

How are the “star ratings” calculated?
To do this, we have looked at every single Ofsted report and extracted the “key judgements” from it. We take the average of all these key judgements and create a star rating. We do not perform any judgement ourselves. You can examine the calculations in more detail here.

How important is the star rating?
The star rating is just one of many factors to consider when choosing a school or nursery for your child. Any important decision should never be made just by looking at a single source of information. You should always seek further advice and information from sources such as:

  • Other parents with children at the establishment.
  • Ofsted reports available from http://www.ofsted.gov.uk
  • Visiting the establishment and asking questions, particularly if there is any aspect of the Ofsted report that concerns you.
  • Visiting similar establishments in your area to get a feel for the strengths and weaknesses of each.

How are you connected with Ofsted?
We have no connection or affiliation with Ofsted whatsoever. We are just parents who got fed up trying to make sense of Ofsted reports.
