The state of education in 2008

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

It is often difficult to see the big picture when talking about Ofsted. So this is the first of a few posts that will take a broader look at the inspection judgements we have in our database. The following chart shows a summary of the 40,000 new-style Ofsted reports that have been published over the past 2 - 3 years:
Ofsted inspection summary

The chart shows that there is a relatively small number of “Outstanding” nurseries and a relatively high number of “Inadequate” secondary schools. Also of note are the high number of establishments hovering around the “Satisfactory” grade.

Secondary school league tables published

Friday, January 11th, 2008

The government’s secondary school league tables (based on exam performance) have been published for this year. These tables have been loaded into our database.

Just a reminder that our tables are based on Ofsted inspection results, not these exam results, to give you a fairer and more consistent view. We will only use exam results in the case where two schools have very similar inspection outcomes.

December Ofsted inspection statistics

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Happy New Year to you all. We’ve finally crunched the December numbers and can confirm that we analysed 1,617 Ofsted reports in December. The breakdowns are as follows:

Type Outstanding Good Satisfactory Inadequate
Nurseries and
daycare
71 (7%) 613 (63%) 226 (24%) 60 (6%)
Primary schools 87 (17%) 289 (53%) 139 (27%) 15 (3%)
Secondary schools 29 (23%) 43 (34%) 40 (31%) 15 (12%)

The notable statistic is still the percentage of inadequate secondary schools. This has increased again this month, from 10% to 12%.
